Margie Raynor during her Nullabor trip in '05 while fundraising for Kidney Research

Renal Ride - Darwin 2009

We're finished!

Renal Ride Darwin 2009 was a continuation of Margie's fight to see kidney disease bought to the fore. With a 20,000 kilometre cycling trip around Australia and 3 Nullabor crossings as experience, Margie can now add south to north in amongst her epic journeys. Margie rode from Adelaide in South Australia to Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory. A distance of approx. 4 500 kilometres!

Using the same amount of time it took you to read this paragraph, or drink a single glass of water, a donation could be made to help research the fight against kidney disease, what for many of us is a largely preventable and yet overlooked part of our everyday health.

BIO

My name is Margie Raynor and I am a recreational cyclist when I am not teaching.

I've been cycling for kidney disease since cycling the Nullarbor in 2005. In 2007, I cycled around Australia, solo and unsupported, a distance of 19 200km. Many generous people donated to Kidney Health Australia and many warm-hearted people encouraged me and offered long lasting friendship and hospitality during my ride.

In 2008, a much more "sedate" 2 800 km was cycled west to east across the Nullarbor raising almost $10 000 in the process.

My aim is to cycle every major highway in Australia, raising funds and awareness of kidney disease. So far, I'm the only person I know who has cycled Australia for kidney disease but I'm hoping that with my goal to undertake an annual long distance cycle, more cyclists will be encouraged to get on the saddle and join in.

This year, I will be cycling a distance of approx 4 500km from Adelaide to Darwin. I hope to visit schools and hospitals along the way, encouraging local community awareness of the need to promote and maintain optimal kidney health and reduce the potential of being one of the 2 million Australians already affected by early stage kidney disease without knowing it.

Woodcroft Primary School students and teacher Rick Berry will again be tracking my journey and contacting various schools along the way. Once again, this trip is self-funded, enabling all generous donations to benefit much needed research for kidney health.

We urge Australian companies to get behind this important venture so that the statistic of 11.3% of all deaths in Australia, currently associated with kidney failure, will be drastically reduced.
